From shackets to ’90s plaid, these trends will be all over the local fashion scene this season.
Now that Labor Day weekend has come and gone, it’s time to start thinking fall. And there’s no better way to get ready for the changing of the seasons than with a closet overhaul. These are five fashion trends that are sure to dominate the streets of NoVA this fall, and the local boutiques where you can find them.
The Shacket
The shacket is a shirt-jacket combo, perfect for fall temperatures. At first glance, it looks like your typical autumnal flannel, but you will soon see it’s thicker than a regular plaid shirt. 3 Sisters on King Street has a great option combining the best of two favorite fall materials — corduroy and flannel. And we can’t forget to mention that it’s reversible.
Long cozy sweaters
Cozy sweaters will never go out of style. This super comfy-piece by Nic + Zoe is a slightly chunkier weight with intarsia knitting, a shawl collar, and longer length to keep you extra warm on cooler days. Longer sweaters also allow fashionistas on a budget to make a statement with one piece. Lemoncello Boutique in Arlington, VA sells this Nic + Zoe sweater (and other great fall favorites).
The Clueless aesthetic
If you’re a ‘90s kid like me, chances are you remember the movie Clueless. The aesthetic of the movie is back, along with other ‘90s trends. Think plaid skirts and suits, platform oxfords and loafers, chokers, and more. This checkered miniskirt from South Moon Under (Fairfax, Reston, Arlington, and more) is something Cher Horowitz would definitely have in her super technologically advanced (for the time) closet.
Sequins and fringe circa the 1920s
They always say fashion comes back around, right? Well, 100 years ago when flappers were dominating the style scene, sequins and fringe were all the rage. And you can now find that shiny style back in NoVA thanks to Alexandria’s Mint Condition. A recent find that pays homage to the 1920s, but with a modern twist, is this Veronica Beard sequined black zip-up.
High waisted, loose-fitting jeans
Rejoice! Loose, high-waisted jeans are officially back in style. Teens have been wearing them for the last few years now and the adult fashion scene is taking note. Francesca’s Boutique, with multiple locations in the DMV, sells lots of fun finds in the jeans department. These Harper Heritage Straight Leg Destructed Jeans have scoop pockets, a coin pocket in front, and patch pockets on the back. Plus, the distressed details paired with a sweater and sneakers make for a perfect fall look.
